When I was quite young, my father needed to go up into the attic to fix some new lights in the bedroom ceiling. I asked to go up with him to see what he was doing. Once he'd found the junction box, he checked to see whether the terminals were live. Not with a neon screwdriver, but with his fingers (this is 240v land). He turned his hand over, and touched the two terminals with his knuckles. He gave something between a squeak and a yelp, and his arm shot back. Then he explained to me the clench reflex, always assume your muscles are going to contract, and always arrange it so that pulls you off the juice, rather than grabbing hold of it.
I do lots of stupid things around high voltages, but I don't do that.

When experimenting on live circuits I always work on a GFI leg when possible to minimize the possibility of death gripping a hot line. Of course this does not mean you are free to grab on to what ever you like, charged caps would still discharge into you if given the opportunity. Also don't try to run a TC on a GFI. Well you can try but with current leaking out of it into the air or ground, GFI's will generally trip the second you turn the TC on.
