Ah my friend bought 1,600 feet of #30 awg magnet wire and wants to build a Tesla coil with it. Neither of us are picky about the design and we pretty much just want to start with the secondary coil and work backwards from there. So any advice (SSTC vs SGTC etc.) is appreciated.

What we do want:
- Use all, or almost all of the magnet wire
- Big discharges
- Audio Modulated

Also, neither of us own an NST so we'd like to run it off of mains (120v) or Microwave Oven Transformer(s).
I have 3 Mots, one of them with the primary coil knocked out.

well, you cant play music with a sgtc, but a vttc can with a high voltage primary circuit. though i hav'nt seen much in taht area. for a first tc, your best bet would be in a mains powered sstc, because a drsstc is not only a pain with igbt chunks flying around when you screw up, but you also need extremely precise microcontrollers(16bit timers) and some really good programming skills to get it to not blow up even more igbts. look around, sstc's are all over the place, and not hard to build at all.

I think you can audio modulate an SGTC if you use a triggered spark gap

300 - 400 W of input power for a 30 awg coil should be fine, aka low power stuff,

But 2 mots and you're lookin at 3kw, which would require something like 26 or 24 awg.

I think you're going to need heavier wire.

Or you can use spark gap that can change its electrode distance (stepper motors maybe) to change frequency of arcs, then it will play music :)
