8 phase for cpu + 2 phase for onboard graphics, seems a bit crazy, but a processor eating 60A probably justifies it.

24-phases on the CPU...designed for suicide overclocking runs where the processor runs at 1.9Vcore (up from ~1V stock) and draws upwards of 200A.

Because 3 small buck converters are more cost-effective than one big one.

Some advantages:

The input and output ripple is at 3x the switching frequency, so less smoothing capacitance is needed.

The transient response can be 3x better for the same switching frequency. Newer multiphase controller chips react to a big load step from the CPU by overriding the switching sequence and jamming all the high-side FETs on at once. Again this saves money on capacitors.

These advantages could be had by running a single big converter at 3x the frequency, but then the switching losses would be 9x greater. (3x the parasitic capacitance, 3x the frequency.)

I used 3 as an example, but the advantages scale. If you need lots and lots of current for a high-end CPU, you can just add more and more phases.

Are you meaning a cpu type 3 ph smps? or a 3 ph AC inverter for motors and such?

You grab yourself some multiphase controler IC's and go to town

You could probably also do 2-phase pwm with a TL494 or similar, as long as you dont need more than 50% duty cycle output.

why didnt you say so.... thats easy, as others said you can get ASIC's for that. (application specific integrated circuits) so look at TI stuff on mouser or digikey.
