 		Cheapest and easiest:
Variac with transformer/doubler, rectified, filtered

Next easiest featuring electronic control and no variac, but really bad power factor:
Triac/etc. voltage chopping

Next easiest, and still pretty bad power factor:
Buck-boost/SEPIC/etc

Hardest but great performance:
PFC-corrected boost, followed by buck/flyback/etc


That's about the only options, with obvious slight variants that fit into the same categories.

Take your pick.

Where do you get your variac's and what's your definition of cheap?
Jaycar sells them for over around $300 I cant remember the rating
