Yes, grid-intertied inverters are limited by law to something like 5% distortion. I once built one and it is not a project for a beginner. tongue

I believe many modern appliances will run happily off DC. I also know that audio-visual equipment doesn't like a modified sine wave, because the sharp edges couple high-frequency noise into the audio and video wiring.

Interesting.
Wonder why they don't just use multiple coils with increasing number of turns to get a nice smooth sinewave with a simpler circuit..

I don't see how multiple coils leads to a simpler circuit.
Having been involved in the design of a 300kW 3 phase sinusoidal inverter I would say the hardware is already relatively simple: a full bridge followed by an LC filter (3 phase in my case). The software to drive the bridge is a little more complex, especially if you want a clean sine output. You need to account for the transfer function of the bridge and filter (one is digital , one is analogue). We also found that changing from a linear interpolation of our sine lookup table to a second order polynomial (parabolic) got our harmonic distortion under 1%. I still remember the diagram of the control loop - it covered the entire whiteboard!
