This coil may be used used to step up or down between voltages in the 110 -120 volt range and voltages in the 220-230-240 volt range, e.g., to output either 110 or 120V (with taps) from 220/230V input. A-C = 120Vac B-C = 110Vac A-E = 240Vac A-D = 230Vac B-D = 220Vac To be connected as a variac we chose one end of the winding to be connected in common to both the voltage source and the load and secondary connection through the sliding brush, giving a variable turns ratio.

If you live in the us, it's nice to have some extra voltage, but on a 220-240v circuit, I can't think of very many situations you would need an extra 20-40v. Except maybe to push an sstc or drsstc to its limits.

should. an the case you use one extra tap, you will get less stress on the transformer. one less, and more stress. but these thing are tough. i use a small power supply xfmr as an autotransformer, and it doesnt mind at all having a couple amps at 240v running through it. and with open winding, yours will handle much much more. have fun.
