Best circuit for getting 300ish VDC from 120VAC (wall outlet)?

So I need a way to get about 300 volts DC from a wall outlet plug. I've looked at circuits for villard cascade/cockcroft-walton generator type circuits, or I could also get a transformer and step up the wall plug AC to 240-360 volt range, then rectify that current. What's the best circuitry for this?

transformer plus rectifier will probably charge the caps faster than the cockroft-walton multiplier, but the multiplier 'may' cost less, depending on what caps you get, etc.

Hello,

As you only need a doubler, I'd start by looking for two biggest motor run capacitors you can find. They are common in junk like washing machines and usually about 20uF in europe - I assume they're about 40uF in US then.

Charging time depends on size of your bank too, if your bank is small then it might charge too fast for you to shut it off manually before it reaches over 300V in which case you might want to use smaller doubler caps (any will work as long as they are nonpolarized and rated for adequate voltage).

You can use any capacitance in the voltage multpilier, but higher capacitance means more current, and a faster charging time. Here's a calculator that will show you the relationships involved. The best way to design this though is to get LTSpice (free) and design your whole circuit. Or if you want you can give me your specs and I'll run a sim for you.

I did not now the caps had to be non polarized I was able to build a very successful dubler using camera caps to charge my 450v bank from from 240v but maby that's why my charge resistor got so hot

Well, you do not want to charge your caps above the rated voltage, as it will damage them.

I would rather use an isolating transformer with bridge rectifier than a doubler
because the 300V circuit will be isolated from the ac line
- safer
- able to connect oscilloscope etc.
