Hey Destroyer, I've just recently gone through this learning curve and found the following tubes on eBay and worthy of consideration:

811A - Commonly used for small projects. Good watts per buck ratio.
572B - Same form factor to 811A but rated for more power. Costs around double.
833A - A common larger sized tube. Plenty of existing projects to copy.
GU-5B - Handles up to 3.5KW and doesn't cost much more than an 833A, but the filaments are power hungry.

Also Check out: DA42, GU-81M and the GMI-7.

There are of course zillions of other options out there and it all comes down to your goals, budget and inventory.

I'll be interested to see which tubes other members suggest.

There are hundreds of tube types which work well for a VTTC and are still relatively common.
Any transmitting tube with a plate disspation of a few hundred Watts will work.

Cool I hadn't considered the GK71, It looks similar in power to the 572B but it's a pentode which adds a little complexity, you could copy (and downscale) any GU-81M coil which is a more commonly used pentode in VTTCs. I think almost any transmitting tube will handle tesla coil frequencies into the MHz. The tube data sheets often specify what plate voltage you can run at high frequencies, but you'll probably end up tuning for maximum smoke regardless of what's in the data sheet.

As for price, you can pick up a new Shuguang 811A for around $25 delivered off ebay (datasheet), or you could try RFParts.com for a Taylor 811A which is supposedly better quality IF you can get a response from them. I've sent 3 emails asking about 572Bs and had no response, so I ended up buying crappy shuguang tubes from eBay.

The only reasons I new of the gk71 is because that's the one Ratereducer used in his hfvttc which is very cool BTW
