Hi All, I have decided to make a dual pol marx generator, a ten stage per tower powered by a 10kV flyback connected to a CW doubler for a total of 20kV or so. The caps I am going to use are 30kV 2700pF. Hoping for around 350kV out or so but we will see how it goes.
Has anyone out here built a twin tower before?
And also I am rebuilding a fairly large bonetti machine, but I am not sure if I want to keep it a bonetti or turn it into a wimhurst machine.
The machine has 17" discs I need to do a little work to the leyden jar caps and add some disharge spheres to it. This machine is actually almost "Steampunk" looking.
I have built wimhurst machines but never tried a bonetti machine. If I am not mistaken these need to be kick started to work correct me if I am wrong. The caps are made from Pyrex with copper foil plates inside and out.
If anyone is interested I can post a pic of it. Just looking to see if anyone has any experience in Bonetti machines.

A Bonetti machine is a sectorless wimhurst. It uses bare discs without any metal sectors, but it sounds like they need to be kick started to work meaning a charge has to be applied to one of the rotating discs. I could use the VDG to start it, I tried to start it with my hand held VDG wand but that did seem to do the job, so maybe it needs a bit more.
I need to add a couple more brass rods to it with discharge spheres to on the end. I dont think it needs a lot of work but it needs work...it does look pretty cool though. The round puck looking aluminum brushes on ether side of the disks have needles in them to pick up the charge.
Heres a picture of it, I am thinking if I cant get it to work I will change it over to a wimhurst machine.

The Bonetti machine really needs some charge on the disks to start. A pointed wire connected to a high-voltage generator (may be the VDG) with the point opposite to one of the neutralizers is enough. The machine is sensitive to humidity. It will work reliably only in dry air, or for some time if heated with a hair dryer. What is the material of the insulators holding the charge collectors? The crank is quite close to the output conductors.

HI Antonio, The material holding the charge collectors is phenolic. I will give it a charge with the big VDG the small hand held VDG did not do the job.
It could be because of humidity as well. I will heat it up a little with a hair dryer and see if that works. I know it works with the VFG on hunid days.
I still need to get some brass rod for the discharge terminal mount. But other than that I think its pretty much complete.

The Marx Generator I spoke about is underway. Lots of bolt trimming and "corona be gone" work to do, so lots of work left on it but its slowly taking shape. Its going to be powered with 25kV. The caps are rated at 30kV and are 2700pF each. There will be 10 stages.
I am going to use a 12 / 60 NST rectified into a CW voltage doubler, voltage into the NST will aprrox 80Vac. That should get me not to far below 25kV. Total power should be around 8.5J. No record setter but it should have a nice pop to it...:)

Have you seen this one
Yes I have seen that one. Its pretty cool, I had a bunch of doorknob caps laying around (over 100) that were left over from another project that got changed to something else originally they were going to be used for a CW multiplier for several hair standing machines, so I decided to make something out of a few of them, I am using all left over scrap material to make this. I thought I might have enough haysite left over to make a twin tower but looks like I am going to be short. So maybe I will only make up this single tower because the second tower would have to be made from different material and would not look like a matching pair.
Hopefully If I get some time to play with it some more I can get it running this weekend.

I managed to get back to work on the Marx, for the test run I am using a 3kV NST run into a voltage tripler. Input to the NST is 100V. Charging resistors are 1Meg carbon comp resistors and they wont take much more. So I will need to replace them with some decent resistors but for now I used what I had on hand and they seem to be working at least for the moment.
The caps are 30kV at 2700pF.
Spark distance at this voltage input level is just over 5 inches which tells me I m somewhere between 100kV and 110kV or so, firing is pretty consistant with one fire every 9 to 10 seconds or so.
I attached a picture. I turned off all but one small light so the pic is a little dark but not too bad,
