Right now im really confused about proper grounding of the different components in a tesla coil. im finding so much contradicting information on the internet.i read that RF ground should not connect to transformer Ground, the opposite of what the schematic shows. hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. i attached a drawing to refer to. basically just wondering which points get connected to eachother and whether they go to earth ground or mains ground.
A=mains ground B= Ground on the EMI noise filter C=chassi of HV transformer also common to center tap of output D=transformer ground on terry filter E=RF ground on terry filter F=Ground point for the strike ring G= earth ground for the bottom of the secondary
RF ground should connect to all parts of the circuit where RF energy -should- be present: 1) secondary ground 2) strike rails/targets 3) Terry Filter ground
You don't want to connect mains ground to RF ground because it can form a ground loop and let RF in to the mains, which is what the filters are trying to prevent.
So, mains ground goes to: 1)NST centertap/case 2) EMI filter ground

That clear it up?
thats another contradiction that i dont understand. RF ground should be seperate than mains ground, yet if you look at the schematic for the terry filter, they are connected together as one big ground for everything. one side is NST ground which is mains and the other side goes to RF ground, yet they are connected together
It says right on the schematic "do not connect mains earth to NST" this means at the power cord. You don't want RF ground connected to your mains ground because of ground loop issues and backfeeding.
So, if you want to connect your NST chassis to the terry filter then you have to clip off the earth prong on the plug, or use an adapter (or don't wire the ground lead if your NST is cordless).
Both ways work equally well, but if your NST internally shorts to the housing (which happens some times with bushings) and is connected to the RF ground (but not the mains ground) it can backfeed HV RF to the mains lines or become case-live if your filter were to suddenly fail. When you isolate the NST shell from the RF side of things this risk is reduced. It is only a risk in a catastrophic failure which you should be working to minimize anyway. I personally use mains ground on NST shell.
