Gazing globes is an older rich people thing to throw in garden pools and dams, now cheap and widely accessible for normal people with kids pools and high voltage enthusiast looking for a cheap sphere top load.

Are they metal? I thought about using one of these when I first started with TCs. I bought one from walmart, turns out it was glass, with the metal coating on the inside.

They are metal, and even can be soldered! (I solder a needle on top of it)
If they are indeed steel then you can drill a hole in the base and use a bolt as a support. I agree though, a perfect sphere may not be the easiest to mount, unless you use an outward facing pvc endcap on top for it to rest in.
