Hello 4HV World,

I've been lurking on this site for a few months now and just completed my registration. I thought I would take a minute to introduce myself.

I'm interested in analog electronics, machining and recently glass working. I've managed to combine all these hobbies into vacuum high voltage experiments. Check the YouTube video link in my signature for an example of one such project.

Recently completed projects:

140 kV Marx ladder that makes loud 8.5" long sparks

Large flyback transformer under oil, ~1100 turns on the secondary, 5 + 5 turns primary driven with the Mazzilli driver, input power up to 480 watts so far. This thing lights up plasma globes like Vegas.

Problems/Projects I'm working on:

I'm trying to figure out a really great charge balancing circuit for a series string of ultracapacitors. I've tried zener diodes and LEDs and I'm not impressed with either. If anyone has suggestions I'm all ears.

I'm in the process of building a hand cranked generator in the form of an axial flux permanent magnet alternator.

Thanks for taking a look,
Mark

Thanks Tom!

It appears the link to my YouTube video did not post. I think I remember something about needing ten posts before I'm allowed to post links. Oh well, in an attempt at vanity, if you find yourself on YouTube search for "Neon Bulb Crackle Tube." My video should be the first on the list posted by "AxcelleratorT."

I'm hoping to get more videos up soon. I'd like to post my neon bulb "fire flys" and a method for making glass to metal seals using borosilicate glass and tungsten wire.

Hi NE-2,

What's your "nixie tube problem"?

Cheers

Hi Nicko,

I guess my NIXIE tube problem is that I want to rescue all of them from E-bay, one auction at a time. Once they're in my play room they can rest easy until I get around to employing them in some numeric readout.

I've rescued many many 1000's from eBay and elsewhere over the years, but there's still a lot left.

They are fun. Have a look at Google neonixie-l group (the predecessor eponymous Yahoo! group is in archive mode).

Cheers
