Just use a phototransistor and an ir led to trigger the scr I used it for my small coil gun and it worked fine you will just need another transistor to amplify the signal before sending it to the scr

probably better than two wires conducting through the projectile: A microswitch who's lever protrudes into the barrel. The switches used in floppy and cd drives to detect the end positions of the disk/tray work even better and are more sensitive.
Using the barrel to close the coil and capacitors through the projectile would cause a Lorentz force (on the projectile) toward the wall of the barrel which could cause some significant friction.

Good idea, if your trying to avoid the optical route the switch would be better than the wires. I still think the extra physical work of cutting up the barrel and mounting the switches exceeds the effort involved with a simple optical emitter/detector. But sometimes it's all about whats sitting in your junk bins!
