so. for a very slow physics project i am doing with my ap teacher and a few other students, we are working on a rsgtc using mots and an asynchronous spark gap. because i have only built static gaps and ss coils before, i would like to have a bit of input from those who have built these before.
first off: i have a 170vdc 4.6A motor(and its the best thing i can easily get my hands on) which spins at 5500rpm. WAYYY too fast for a spark gap. but using full wave rectification we get 100rpm and half wave gets 125(no filter cap, see below). this was measured by sticking a small piece of tape on the axle, then touching it while recording with audacity. but anyways, is there any way to easily modify the speed without a variac? i thought maybe triac's like in a dimmer switch, but it may not work so well with an inductive load.
second: what is a decent break rate for a dc charging tesla coil with a small capacitor. the tank cap is a large bank of al foil and overhead transparencies. easily 5nF per cap, and we can make quite a few
third: what is a decent filter cap for my motor? i think the reason its going so slowly is the lack of a constant power source (nope, actualy i know that that is the reason )
if it helps, we are using two series mot's perhaps with voltage doubling or tripling. it depends on experimentation with the system after first light. the coil is maybe 100-200khz including torroid.
also, any other tips would help too, this is my largest coil yet to date.
