I am having trouble finding suitable ferrite cores for use in a gate drive transformer. I can find ones that are recommended on here online but the shipping prices to the UK are expensive.

For example Link2 I am not paying £15 delivery!

All the ones I have salvaged all make my chips get very hot fast.

Anyone know where I can get suitable cores in the UK cheaply? They need to be able to work at 20-100khz.

Thanks.

Drop your address here and i'll send you a couple at no charge, although they will ship via standard 1st class. I have Fair-Rite 5977006401 types.

If you want them faster, then the USPS Priority shipping flat rate is $12.00 i think.

EVR's offer really can't be beat. smile But since you asked for UK sources: I think I used similar Fair-Rite cores, but I got mine from RS because they had UK stock.

Fair-Rite make lots of different ferrite grades. 77 and 78 are what we mostly use for GDTs and feedback/protection CTs.

Maplin also sell ferrite rings in their CB radio department. I've no idea what material these are made of, but if you've got a Maplin nearby, they might be worth a try.

I do know that if you're salvaging cores from equipment, the yellow/white and green/blue ones are common, but useless for GDTs. They're iron powder, not ferrite.

@EastVoltResearch I sent you a PM ( :

@Steve Conner Thanks. The cores were out of a couple of old TV's/monitors that I used for parts awhile ago. They had no colouring/ just plain ferrite. None of them seem to be well suited since they make my chips get hot (I even had a UCC37322 explode as soon as I connected power!).

I have read up lots online about winding your own GDT's and have followed all the advice in using tri-filier windings to reduce leakage inductance but it all seems to point to the core being the problem. I should be getting that scope soon so I will be able to check things like this and make sure waveforms are relatively decent rather than just waiting until something gets hot.

I did check maplins but the problem, like you said, you just don't know what you are getting as there are no datasheets.

I think I will be taking up EVR's offer smile

The Fair-rite part numbers begin 59xx. 59 means it's toroid shaped, xx is the material type.

So out of that list, look for ones that begin 5977 or 5978.
