I am totally new at High Voltage experimenting. I have been looking for a transformer suitable for a Telsa coil or jacbobs ladder. 1000bulbs.com sells a new France 15030 P5G-2UE 15kv, 30 ma, and 120 volt input for about $100. This transformer has a SCGFP but has a service button that overrides the scgfp for up to 30 minutes. Does this sound usable?

Any suggestions for alternative transformers?

Thanks

TV flyback transformers are a fun, cheap, and relatively safe place to start as well. Link2
They will require a driver circuit to operate but the circuits are simple, the internet (especially here) is loaded with them, and you'll learn plenty of useful things from making them. Here are several examples from one of my favorite resources Link2
Flybacks can make small jacobs ladders, but are not particularly useful for tesla coils (your NST would be much better for that)

A new NST for $100 isn't too bad of a deal, as used ones often sell for ~$50

Grenadier has several for sale in the sale and trade section here Link2 at a very good price (I'd buy a couple myself if I had a little more extra cash) and I do not believe it is against site rules for new members to buy things (only sell)

Oh, and Welcome to 4hv

Thanks for the reply. Those NST's that Genadier has would probably be a good spot to start, much cheaper. Hope he has some left.
I am still wondering though about the new transformers with the SCGFP and the override button though? It seems like they should work.

I've never heard of an NST with an override on the GFCI, but I guess it should be fine if it is a true complete override.

Ya, I am in the process of getting one from here at 4hv. Still wondering if anyone has had experience with transformers that have the GFI bypass. Sooooo... if you have used one speak up!

Gren's NSTs all have inverted bushings which are a pain sometimes. I have one of his and am getting another if he ever gets around to answer his pms, heh. With mine the corroded copper springs broke so I sanded down the screws they are connected to inside the bushing well and poured a couple ounces of molten solder onto it with a new heavier gauge copper wire held inside while it cooled. It worked well but was a real pain. NSTs with screw terminals are much more user friendly.
