So I just finished my bachelors in electrical engineering last year and was thinking of getting into research.
During my senior years in university I mainly did power engineering related topics, however now I am not that keen on power engineering, but the research related to smart grids and electric vehicles sound rather interesting.

I guess out of the two I find electric vehicles to be the most interesting.

But, Im not sure where to start looking. I have already looked at the websites of various universities (Mainly in Europe and Australia). However it does not give the big picture. Btw, I did my bachelors in Australia.

Are there some good resources you guys could recommend where I could get more information on the interesting research areas related to electric vehicles and smart grids?

My second question is, I know next to nothing about American universities. I know the big ones are MIT and Caltech etc, but I doubt i could get into those.
But are there some other universities that are big on EVs and smart grids?

Thanks a lot for your help.

You're best to email some universities which do research in the general areas you're interested in directly. Universities are frequently very poor at communicating what they do via the internet and updating web sites.

Searching google and IEEE Xplore if you have access will also help you track down current researchers in your chosen field.

Do take care to check out and investigate your potential PhD supervisor carefully, they vary vastly in competence and usefulness.

You are lucky. I did my PhD in smart grids 10 years ago, before anyone had thought to call them smart grids. That was at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Of course when I graduated there was no smart grid industry yet to work in, so I ended up doing a lot of weird stuff. But once you get a PhD nobody asks what subject it is in.

I now design condition monitoring equipment for high voltage plant.

I know Strathclyde now do smart grid research, and they also have an EV. Last time I looked it was no Tesla Roadster, but maybe they've improved it. Or got rid of it... smile

The quality of PhD supervisors does vary widely. I would say that the mean is zero. wink

thanks for that. Strathclyde was one of the universities that were recommended to me buy this other guy who did research in the UK.

I'm still looking into the area I want to specialize anyway, its really hard to decide as I would be stuck with it for 4 years if I don't like it.

But thanks for the feedback, ill still keep looking around to see what other interesting things are out there.:)
