Yes, you'll need a pair of 10x probes. But also be aware that the probes have an input voltage limit of their own, so they don't necessarily increase your scope's maximum input voltage by a factor of 10. Cheap 10x probes certainly won't take it up to 3000V.

So, you may want a 100x high voltage probe too.

one other thing to keep in mind, the sample rate should be 10x the bandwidth for the scope to be of any use at that bandwidth.

Thanks, I think it comes with probes according to the amazon page. BTW I don't mean that I am buying the scope specifically for the purpose of scoping higher voltage circuits, that would be ridicules. I intend to use it for all sorts.

I just don't want to accidentally kill the scope if I do happen to check the waveform of something that does create lots of high voltage spikes (such a flyback primary coil etc).

Thanks, did not know that. So the bandwidth rating on a scope is really its absolute max( similar to how a DSLR camera's max ISO mode is a last resort)? Speaking of that I recall reading on the EEVBlog that there is a mod you can do on the rigol to get 100mhz of bandwidth.

I have a hps40 handheld which is very nice. It displays just about any signal you need as long as you don't get into radio. The only downside is that it only has one channel. But it's good because you can move it around unlike the bench tops. My favorite part is that it has sample memory and can take time and potential measurements on those captured signals. Plus it's only around 300 USD.

When buying a digital one you have to care most about the things:
1- Bandwidth, you got this covered.
2- Sample rate. The real one. They usually advertise one that only works with the signal is periodic. The real is sometimes kind of hidden at the spec sheet. Compare them using this one
3- Memory depth! When you 'pause' it you can scroll the screen to the sides or change the time scale back an forth. Mine has 4000 points if I am not mistaken, and the screen is only 320x240.

Looks like I am going with the Rigol DS1052E, but before I buy I am wondering where I should buy it from as I have read about lots of fakes being sold.

I am thinking of getting it from amazon Link2 but the seller appears to be based in China. Should I be put off by this?
