Righto, I've an old Satallite 310 from Toshiba: a whopping 166MHz pentium MMX processor, 24MB ram... and no hardrive. Awkward.
Trying to make it boot Damn Small Linux-- with a boot disk and the OS on USB, it's supposed to be able to function. Except... the disk drive is also toast. More awkward.
The CD drive works fine, but the DSL LiveCD, as far as I know doesn't support going diskless right out of the box. I suspect this because it hangs every time it starts to boot the kernal. Is anyone familiar enough with DSL "cheatcodes" to tell me if there is a way to make the CD boot to the USBpendrive?
Alternatively... is there any way to turn my bootdisk into a BootCD? Google gives conflicting answers on that count.

The morphix lice cd has a boot loader that has the option to boot from USB. This would be a bit of overkill just to boot from the USB but you can probably get the source and have just that boot loader on a CD set to boot the USB as default.

Sounds interesting trying to load off usb... never tried that. I have used PHLAK Linux wich is based on Morphix and loads completely off the cdrom on my old celeron 366MHz. I actually still use my 366 computer often and it does just fine with Linux (I currently run CentOS 3).

Well, without the HDD or disk, USB is needed for any customized config files, extra programs, et cetera.

I managed to get DSL booting off of the CD; I was slightly suprized that it was able to, sans swap or anything but CD and RAM, but there you go. Unfortunately, it will only boot into Failsafe or Lowram modes-- both of which disable sound and USB, amongst other things which aren't terribly important.
I need the USBpendrive for, well, like I said-- custom config, extra programs. I need the soundcard because I want to turn this old laptop into an O-Scope/Analyzer (of sorts).
I've tried fiddling with the boot settings, so far without success. I suppose my question has to change completely, now-- can any of the Linux boffins here tell me how to initialize those kernel modules, after they've been excluded at boot? Is there a way? DamnSmallLinux, for the record, is based on a stripped-down Knoppix, using the old 2.4 kernel.

EDIT: Got the boot settings I need; now I just need to load xoscope onto it, and build a buffer into the harddrive bay. w00t.
