If you follow the maker on paper version of the schematic , the 1n4007 should be okay.
If "reversing L1" simply means flipping L1 up side down, that's not going to work as the wire is still wounded the same direction as it progress up the secondary toward the top load. Try swapping the connections to L1 instead.
Get the transistor going before trying the MOSFET. With a transistor, the current drawn (100mA) is limited by the base current and current gain. So when you screw up, it is not going to be too bad. If you put in the MOSFET in when the circuit is not oscillating is just going to draw a lot of current.
The 12V zener diode and the orientation in the original schematic might be meant for the MOSFET.
