Hi guys,
So I'm working here at SLAC, supervisor comes into my office and tells me that within the next couple of months I might be starting to work with some people on designing a sub 100 fs laser timing system...
I have a good electronics background, but only a small amount of experience dealing with high speed stuff. Does anyone have a good recommendation for a book I can use to get some background in high speed circuit design?

I have not actually used any RF textbooks in the 2 years worth of RF classes I have taken at UCSB, so I cannot really offer much advice, however I can say that the lectures notes were amazing, and available to be viewed online. The notes from Rodwell for ECE145A/B were the bread and butter, there is also some stuff from York for ECE134/ECE144 which covers it from a more e/m side of things. rodwell york
Good luck with your laser project, I am starting in the fall at MIT in their RLE group ( which does some of this type of work (, a shame you didn't ask next year I will probably be much more knowledgeable about it then
What I can say, however, is to start out by getting familiar with scattering parameters (s-parameters) and smith charts, they are entirely non-intuitive but extremely useful. You can then move onto the basics like impedance matching, or go strait into how noise works. I will warn you, the notes for 145b (the class which dealt with noise) deals with it from a very theoretical standpoint, which is not necessarily what people designing 'real' systems use (Rodwell is making transistors which operate into the THz, so he looks at things a little differently than your typical RF engineer).

Thanks ...! Good luck at MIT! It's totally possible that I might ask next year anyways. I have no idea what I'll actually be doing, but it would be nice if when I start working on this project I can actually track what these guys are saying to me.
