seems that other people do think along the same lines, I was looking into repurposing the sensors for positioning applications.
Could also work if you replaced the red LD (not used for LS burning) with a 405nm diode and series lens. The existing optics need to be left intact to ensure reliable results, as the diode is used for power feedback..
Maybe rewire the sled drivers and focus/etc drives to a second drive, via a power amplifier.
Alternate idea, scratch build the optics and positioner, but use a spare hard disk motor and the LS sensor disk on a phonograph (aka record player). Then use a stepper motor driven from the existing controller to move the sled, and a custom positioner to move the beam. Good for several watts with a decent sized diode..
