hey again... i just fired up my sstc for the first time with 50v on the bridge. my circuit is functionaly the same as this one. the only diference is there is no gate resistor in mine. is this what caused it? i only have one ucc left. so i have to get it right this time!

ben solon

edit: OK i fixed it. i was rushing and hooked the ucc output tot he high bridge rail! oops. so i used my 2nd ucc and had it working. while tweaking it(first light, nowhere near tuned) the sparks where still about 2-3". then a spark jumped into my antenna killing my last ucc.

so. here is the updated question. how can i add additional protection to my gate driver. i currently use 2 60v schottky diodes.

and secondly, i was running my function generator into the feedback because the 555 was unable to kick the oscillations. the wires wrapped around each other just weren't enough. using a 103k ceramic cap kicked the oscillations, but then filtered out the feedback. any suggestions?

get rid of the 100k resistor that is with diode D2 and it should work by its self. you should use a 10 ohm gate resistor or you might burn the gate and have trouble with mosfets dieing.

there is not much more protection for the gate drivers than what there is in his schematic. just don't let any sparks off the coil touch the antenna and don't worry about the little sparks that come off the antenna. you can have the antenna 6 or 7 inches away and it will work fine. you might be able to use a current transformer but you should probably wait until you have it working good before tinkering with those.

hope that helps a little.

Sure about removing the pull down resistor? It has an internal pull up resistor Internaly. The external one is to make sure that it is easy to change the state of the pin.

And I switched over to secondary base feedback as well. The levels are roughly 3-8v depending on how well I am resonating. To use this layout should I just take the xfmr and tie it to ground and directly into in pin? And with this setup where can I put the enable for kicking resonance?

yes I am sure about removing the pull down resistor, I have built the same sstc. also you can test the ucc with a 555 timer like the one in the schematic, if an led on the output pins blinks it is still good and it was just one of those diodes D1 or D2 that got fried. If so just replace both diodes and test them later.

like I said it would be better to use an antenna than xfmr, your still just trying to get it to work. you don't need to make it more complicated. but when you do get it working just look at Steve's other schematics I think one of them uses base feed back.

also your going to need a good ground on the secondary to make it work good ---> longer sparks

ok, yes, i have actually tested the uccs that way a few times. i now have a few spares as well, so that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

i have a bit more experience with transformers than antennas however, and i got the feedback to match exactly the emf around the coil. with increased voltage even when loaded. the transformer itself will not be the problem. i am just looking for the most efficient way to hook it up to my current setup.

and the coil has long been grounded. i found that problem when not realizing i was using a 3 to 2 pronged adapter and the sparks would quadruple in length when moving a grounded object near it.

and if i just take out the pull-down resistor and introduce the enable signal to the input with a high impedance dc blocking path, it should just fire up? it doesnt seem like it will be that easy tongue
