I am currently applying for civil engineering at several colleges. I already know what the Internet rankings say, but I'd like to know if there is any feedback any of you could give me about the universities, especially since I am not a US citizen and may not know some important fact or a connotation a certain university might have.
I've been admitted to -University of Michigan -Georgia Tech -Purdue -University of Illinois (Urbana Champaign)
Pending Decision -University of California: Berkeley -Carnegie Mellon University
Anything I should know that isn't obvious or should I just go by rankings?

Go Purdue! Yes, I'm biased.
U of M is a good choice if you like American Football, as they have been known to not-suck. Ann Arbor is a fairly civilized place with good proximity to Fun and Excitement. U of I and Purdue, by comparison, are in tiny rural towns that are full of... uh... the kind of people you find in small Midwestern towns. Ahem. Coming from Panama you will freeze to death.
Georgia Tech... I don't know anything about, except that you will not freeze.
Purdue has a reputation for being heavily male ("Purdude" is popular slur)... though in truth the numbers say the distribution is unremarkable. Plus, all engineering programs are sausage fests, though civil probably slightly less so. Bar scene is mediocre, but the campus is attractive. You will freeze to death. Many people outside of the Midwest are under the impression that Purdue is a private school.
U of I is a fine school, but their campus is a festering turd and Urbana-Champaign is a shithole. Bar scene is excellent. You will freeze to death.
Berkeley is a good school. It is awash with hippies, which may or may not irritate you depending on your own proclivities and tolerance level. For my part, they annoy me a bit as I don't like patchouli or hemp. You will not freeze.
Carnegie Mellon... no knowledge. Fancy sounding name though, will go nicely on a resume.

If you want to go with rankings, Georgia Tech is the most highly ranked out of those choices. I'm applying for college next year, and Georgia Tech and Michigan are two colleges that I will definitely apply to. If you live in Georgia, Georgia Tech is almost free as well.
