I need it to be a certain diameter (5.2-6.0 mm) for my project and I'd like it to not be pipe since that alloy of copper is about 85% the conductivity of wiring copper. And hollow.

I'm making a largish transformer. I know I can get the stuff at hardware/building supply stores but that cost is too much. That's more than 7 times the intrinsic copper value, not gonna do it.

Not sure about the application but you can use as many strands of thinner wire as necessary twisted together in parallel to make up the required copper area. e.g. 1 x 4 awg or 2 x 7 awg 4 x 10 awg 8 x 13 awg etc.

I have seen several mains step-down transformers that use several smaller wires in parallel to form a low voltage high current secondary. I have also seen a similar configuration inside a ferrite transformer from a PC PSU. So it should be doable.

Do you have Lowes in your area? They have solid #4 and its generaly cheaper than your local hardware store. I bought some solid #6 there years ago and it was the best deal I could find at the time.

Unfortunately, it seems the cost of wire has just about *trippled* at all my local stores (home depot, menards, lowes). They all seem to have the same prices now. I couldnt believe it when i saw the price of a 500' spool ot 10awg at $100 . 100' of 4 awg is gonna make your wallet hurt if you try to buy at a home improvement store.
I have found a place that says they'll sell it for 0.55 per foot for 100ft. which is far and away the best I've seen, so I think I'll go with them. The copper itself is worth .44 per ft so I think that's the best I can find retail.
