I've been rebuilding my coilgun and have run into some problems with my rewound flyback, I have 5 turns on my primary and around 300 on my secondary driven by a simple 555 driver at 12volts. but Im only getting 80volts out, and I can't diggiee out why, any ideas?

Did you leave an airgap in the core?

Im not sure of your space constraints but i would recommend uzzors2k "50W Capacitor Charger" Link2 I made it and im fitting into a mini coil gun.

Mine uses 1 450 1800uf cap that charges in 5 secs.

Other then that, the 555 timer driver is pretty weak, i have tried it in the past with poor results

I second this. I built a ZVS based charger minus the regulator part and it charges very quickly on just 12v input.

don't have the resources or the time at the moment. but I'm not charging a large cap only 250v 3000uf so 100 j~ and small size constrains this barely fits and It's tiny. any idea why I'm only getting 80v? I Get 5cm sparks of a normal flyback with it so the circuit works fine.

Hi Mac !

It is difficult to advise just based in your above description.
Why you do not show the circuit schematic and some pictures ?

Regards

Have you considered trying uzzor's boost converter?
Link2
similar parts, intended to charge capacitors, and smaller size.

and if you're set on the flyback then whats your transformer look like? is one coil inside the other? are the windings insulated well from each other and the core? do you have thick primary turns? If you only need 250v out, and your secondary has 300 turns, then you could use as many as 14 primary turns. Have you adjusted the frequency so that you get the maximum output? Was the open circuit voltage 80 volts or is that all it was charging your caps up to?

Okay, so i'd rather not go building a new circuit because this is just a side project i thought is whip up over a weekend with a friend using stuff i had lying around (amazing what i found on the mass that is my desk). Right so i origonaly tried 105turns secondary and 5 turn primary and got 80V, so i increased it to 300 to see if that would fix it, But it didn't. For the flyback 3 layers of small wire (not sure gauge pulled of something)each at 100turns insulated by tape. on the other side 5turns of plenty thick wire (again not sure gauge but its defiantly not the problem). I have ajusted the fequency but no change in output. I tried open curcuit and got 80v still. Any ideas?

Sorry for the wall of text,
-matt
