Ive attached some IBGTs comparisons.
Anyone ever used anything with a t-off near ~300nS?
How is this going to bite me? The reason I ask is that I have a bunch of free Microsemi APT100GT60JRDQ4 parts, all specs seem pretty decent except the td(OFF).
Slower is going to limit the di/dt on the trailing switch edge, but I'm not sure how much of a problem thats going to be for me. Is the main problem that the top transistor wont be off when the bottom on turns on for a brief amount of time (shoot thru). Wont that just make me run super hot and put a heavy burden on my bus caps?
Can anyone give me any advice about how the slow switching time will be a problem for me?
I'd really, really like to use the APT100GT60JRDQ4 parts if I can.
EDIT: couldnt I deal with the shoot thru problem by just inserting some dead time (Toff-Ton) in the bridge driver? Then the only real problem is that i dont get nice di/dt on the trailing edge. Or, does the fact that t-off is so long really just mean this part is going to be a bad switch at tesla resonance frequencies?

No such thing as an igbt that's too slow. You just need a bigger coil. Deadtime will solve the shoot-through problem. You can design your driver to switch on/off at 0 current, so those switching times will be less than the spec.
You going to buy those APT100GT60JRDQ4's new? digikey lists them at $35 each. Pretty expensive if you blow them up. Maybe start with some cheaper ones if this is your first coil

Well, I got them for free. I also got some 200 models (APT200GT60JRDQ4) as well.
I have (4) 100 parts and (8) 200 parts.
I'll probably start with some cheaper Fairchild HGTG12N60A4D parts on my first one...
My main question was if the main concern about slow IGBTs was shoot thru...
Maybe the only ones that people use have roughly equal on/off times because Steve's controller doesnt insert any dead time? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Do you think I'm going to need to worry about deadtime?
