...when electricity no longer brings any joy, and they must choose what will be pursued when they apply for college?

Study law or medicine of course! :p Or find out what qualifications JP Morgan etc. want in their graduates, I have no idea. Probably some kind of math.

You can always come back to it as a hobby later.

Electricity will seem to forever enjoy me. Taking out the good ol mot brings a lot of fun. I dont see how one can get bored with electricity, There's always things to push towards, and challenge yourself.

I'm in college going for a degree in CNC machining. Nearly done with the first year.

I'm not doing EE as a degree, because i would absolutely hate doing a career 8 hours + in a day, doing stuff with electronics/electricity, then go home, to be doing the exact same thing. Id get hateful fast. This way, i go home to work on HV projects. I go to work, to go on about designing CAD work and doing general CNC metal work.

Turn on that Tesla Coil that has been hiding in the garage for a few years, or make a flyback driver all over again. Hearing that noise will probably make you realize what you love best. I know 100% sure that I'm going in the field, and if I change my mind, I would just need to be "jolted" back to reality at what I truly love.

If you really do not want to go into the subject (why are you on a HV forum then?) then go into some other physics thing, such as quantum mechanics, or astrophysics? People are trying to find a way to use coilguns to launch space ships. Find that, and you will make billions. :D

Just give the hobby a break and do something else. I've been on-and-off for a few years now.

Over the last 12 months, I have been rennovating a house - so I haven't had any time for electronics. That 'forced' break has somehow re-kindled my interest in electronics, and I find myself working on projects when I should be at my house working on that! This time last year I had all nearly all my spare time available for electronics projects, but I never really did anything but buy components and then let them sit there doing nothing.

If you want a challenge, try to figure out how to make high temperature superconductors at home without the use of a kiln.

Hint:- Induction heater ?

Buy (or carefully build) a violet wand. It livened up my high voltage hobby and got some friends interested as well.

A physics degree is good to go for if you're not sure what specific field of science you want. Of course if the school you go to is anything like mine was, you can't even declare a major until your junior year, which lets you dabble in everything before you decide.
If you're sick of electricity then do something else for a while. video games, chemistry, drinking (my other hobbies) or whatever and then come back to it. Setting goals might be a good way to keep you motivated too (eg. spark length, coilgun m/s, efficiency, neat/compactness)
