Without the free wheeling diode when the switch is open there is no DC current path from the bottom of the inductor anywhere ... so yeah, you need two diodes (at least with the MOSFET, with the SCR the free wheeling diode could be left out because the SCR stays on till the current dies out).
A snubber is not necessary on the switch ... and it makes no sense on the inductor.

Ok, thanks! I thought a snubber would help dampen oscillation during discharge.
