Ah looks pretty good now. Board certainly looks a lot cleaner than your first one doesn't it. It's amazing what a few revisions can do to a circuit. Your ZVS board looks similar to my design.

So, have you found a 12vdc supply to use or do you think you've gotten the ripple down to a reasonable level using the rewound MOT?

Thanks Forty! I know the first ones looked pretty bad! i wanted to make it easy to desolder the components when they blew. I plugged it in and nothing went on fire! no whining noise though. I also got a small voltage in the resonant tank circuit which is a first. Mosfets didnt get even slightly warm. However thats where the success ends unfortunately with no heating. I put the multimeter on the components and the diode test didnt buzz on any component which it had done previously to show they had all blown however they were all giving weird readings which makes me think they are damaged. The diodes were giving numbers in both directions and the resistors not showing the 470r or 10k. Im gonna go pick up some new resistors from maplins in the morning. Do you think the damage could be caused by too big a peak to peak voltage? i do have 86600Uf smoothing so i thought it would be ok. also waiting for a 12v reg to be delivered. oh yeah not rewound the MOT yet as per your advice. I have a 12v Lead Acid Battery would i use that to power the postive rails that feed the gate pins of the FETS? when i replace the components on the board shall i replace the FETs as they didnt get warm so id doubt they are blown?

You could just use the battery to power the whole thing.
And with that much capacitance, I'm sure your ~20v MOT will work fine.
Did you test the components when they weren't soldered into the circuit? When they're in the circuit then it's unlikely that the reading would be correct. I doubt the resistors were damaged unless they were on fire.

spent a bit more time testing and still no heating but no heat in the mosfets or fire and all the components seem to be fine. I did a check on my "fast rec diodes" and it appears they have a recovery of 500ns. I've got a feeling this isnt fast enough. There is also no voltage in the tank circuit. just for reference after the cap bank i am getting 19.7v. Im going to swap out the diodes for faster ones and see if that helps then i will re assess the cap bank. Im getting further in little steps but its frustrating that it doesnt just work haha.

*addendum*
swapped out the diodes with some uf4004 diodes with a response of 50ns. plugged the (not)heater in and still didnt work. getting 20.2v from the smoothing caps now. still no voltage in the work coil. worked out my mosfets were in back to front with the gate and source reversed! resoldered and had to put the smaller heatsinks back on because of their position. Turned it on with a loud buzz from the mot. then a click from the driver circuit followed a few secs later by an almighty bang and flash. blew every component on the board. FETS were very hot. urghhh don't know what else to do.

ok been a while since i began on this project and i have left it alone for a few months. now back to it soldering some new components together directly instead of using the circuit board. I now have a 30a variable dc power supply that runs up to 13.8v. should i continue trying to get this to operate at 12v or is a higher voltage like 30v safer for the components?

*update*

soldered up a quick zvs driver and connected the output terminals to a multimeter and then powered it with a 13.8v 30a dc source. Output register around 400v and then begin falling slowly. everytime i turn it back on it falls slowly from where it was when i turned it off. mosfets are making a little heat and it appears to be increasing the longer its turned on. no noise is audible from the circuit. current draw is around 6A. ideas??
