Brilliant pics Peter, I think you capture the rings very well. Never realised you had a bigger son, either ^^

You mentioned some distances the rings travel... what kind of speeds do you get?

Now that I have a good smoke generator I can get really good shots of multiple rings at different speeds including videos. However, they are predicting severe storms tomorrow so I guess they will have to wait.
Bigger son - yep, I tend to lose count. We couldn't afford shoes for him suprised
The slower ring above at 6 foot was actually going backward with the light breeze. A fast one will shoot across our parking area of perhaps 20m in perhaps 2 or 3 seconds. Once I get the video going I can do a frame by frame with distance markers and plot the speed as it slows
I still want to get a candle blowout distance as well
Pic shows the hollow vortex within the larger mushroom cloud. Looks quite like alien eyes when turned vertically. (No Bjorn, I don't believe in things that can't be seen or measured. Heck, I don't even like most aliens wink )

Nice.

Had built something similar out of a coffee can and a speaker back some years, with a smoke generator based on a 5w ceramic resistor half-immersed in smoke fluid, which worked more-or-less.
Having tried different pulse shapes and amplitudes, performance was bad and well, the usual hand operated one worked better.I guess the speaker cone didnt move far enough.

Do the rings make any audible sound? Mine made a nice buzzing sound at around 50 Hz but I used a small hole and a lot of pressure. I have long since converted the launcher to a VLF antenna so I can't make a recording.

No sound, just the "whummpff" as the diaphragm springs back.
Using a 2 litre milk carton full of smoke is very portable and very cool. Great for public participation.
The commercial smoke generator gives much thicker smoke.

Wow. You have to take some video redoing that last picture. It looks so perfect that I would swear it is photoshoped.

Excellent

I have done some videos. Still seems very clumsy on my Pinnacle studio software .
More on my site soon.

Video (860K)shows how it is fired and how far and fast they go for those who haven't seen one in action.

A little bit late, but here is a picture of me with a somewhat big Vortex cannon. I had pics of it shhoting, though I can't find them right now. I don't have the cannon either, it now belongs to my old high school.

This is an article on vortex rings from Mt Etna possibly 200m diameter and predominantly steam. My physics prof has an interest in vortices (in superfluid helium) and was quite surprised when I told him about these volcanic vortices as he had photographed them himself on Mt Etna many years ago.

Dolphins are quite adept at making vortex rings with air out of their blowholes. I was amazed at these things underwater. I was at Seaworld a year ago and watched them make these rings for about 5 minutes before I realized I should turn on my camera and get some video. If anyone knows how to easily convert Apple Quicktime to Mpg, I will post the videos. IF not, I will post the video in Quicktime format when I get home tonight. It really is fascinating.
