does it have internal cell balancing circuits?

Surely the new Edsel, it's too expensive to be a Trabant. smile

The Chinese company BYD have launched their own hybrid, the F3DM. That could be your Trabant replacement, although I noticed that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway fund has invested $230 million in it.

Interesting to see that the electronics are made in Japan. I wonder if they licensed any Prius technology?

Touchet kind sir, Touchet.

We Americans need to be told: "Put the printing machines down, and step away from the currency!"
But not by anybody in the Eurozone.

The Prius is a more optimized solution anyway...

Even the motor was made in Japan, so perhaps they snagged some stuff from existing E-cars.

Why do you say that? The plug-in style of series-only (or series-capable) hybrids seems like it offers substantial gas consumption and efficiency advantages for fairly common driving patterns compared to parallel hybrids. Toyota is jumping in though with a series/parallel plug-in model which is expected to be cheaper than the Volt, in part due to the smaller battery capacity and reduced all-electric range.

maybe your right, but in terms of sales made, and market share gained, i think GM may throw in the towel as they did with the saturn EV in the 90's.

your parallel/series arugment is the best one to make in defending the Volt, but i know that GM owners are not getting what GM advertises. so we may be approaching parity with the best EV being equal too the new high effciency diesels. ( but the diesels are ceaper and have a longer product life.)

To clarify things a bit - This is not a hybrid. Its electric only with an onboard generator.
Its main use is local around town type driving. If you were going 50-100 miles a day this would not be the car for you.

I asked the instructor if he thought this car was here to stay and he said yes. Federal emission standards are forcing automakers to build these things. Even if they dont sell they have to comply. Sounds crazy but true.

thats what hybrids are. Whether its mechcanical / electrical drive train(s) are paralleled or seriesed doesnt matter. Id believe the SAE long before GM.

..."The Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) definition of a hybrid vehicle states that the vehicle shall have "two or more energy storage systems both of which must provide propulsion power, either together or independently." ..."

As opposed to the nissan leaf which really is electric only, and goes 100 miles on a single charge, its 400lbs lighter too. And supposedly theres so much demand they cant make them fast enough. (If you beleive nissan.)
sales have reached past 10,000 in jan of 2012, compared to about 7000, total volts.

the volt is such a compromise that it doesnt fit any real world market at all. GM also stated that they would not abandon the saturn EV1, they're commited to the future and so on, they killed that too.

A comprimise that is better than any other design in most areas, can easily be exceptionally poor in all areas, to the point that its useless. Its interesting to see that the base prius and leaf are cheaper than the base volt.

Volt = 1715 kg.
Leaf= 1521 kg.

acceleration of mass is what eats batteries and still the leaf goes farther. that 200kg difference is huge.

One question concerns paying road taxes. Here, the tax on motor fuel
pays for roads. How does an electric vehicle pay the equivalent fee ?

Crown Joules ? cheesey
