Secondary internal arcing, repairable?

just finished my first SSTC, and during one of the first test runs had a fairly spectacular failure.

I left the ground from the secondary fairly long so I could easily remove the secondary from the casing, and I diddnt think to take any special care in keeping it away from the walls of the secondary coilform. The coil arced from around the hundredth turn to the grounded end of the secondary through the PVC coilform.

All in all, I learnt a valuable lesson, and I would like to know if I can repair the damage.

I managed to wipe away most of the carbon and its a fairly typical high voltage branching tracking.
Is this damage repairable, and what method is usually used. I vaguely remember reading about something similar somewhere but never read how it was fixed.

this happened when the coil was running at around 180v input, and still had around 8cm sparks.

With some luck that may be repairable. Get a dremel tool and grind all of those carbon marks, wipe it clean with alcohol and cover the damaged area with epoxy glue. Been there done that but mine was even worse.. :)

If windings are still ok and dont have shorted turns then it will work just fine. And even if it has shorted turns you can always remove couple turns and solder the wire back together. You would be surprised how bad looking secondaries can run withouth any problems.

Ah, ok, cool.
I cant see any shorted turns, it still looks undamaged from the outside.
I dont have a dremel tool so I will have to sand it. Sounds like a job for tomorrow.
