Im about to bid on a new mica capacitor for my vttc, my plate voltage is 2 mots in series so just over 4kv. the mica cap is rated at 6kv, is this enough? the auction ends in a hour please let me know!!!

Im really not sure but I beleive I would pass. Tanks caps see almost twice input voltage and your are right on the edge at 6k.

Im no expert, just giving my advise.

how about this? Link2

will this give me high preformance? because I am sick of the power diminishing 1 minute into running!

steve ward used caps like that soooo..... wink

in the future try to see how much capacitance you need to achieve resonance for your setup if you need 10000pf then you would need 4 2700pf caps. 6Kv is good for mots I think with protection but 10 is better. I have seen other caps like maxwell pulse caps or mika used. you may find other pulse caps like poly CDE945 caps might work.

Whats the value of tank capacitance needed?
Try to find capacitors with a KVAR rating, as that is a sign they will work in reactive circuits like a VTTC.

These Russian doorknob caps are great Link2

They will provide plenty of power handling for almost VTTC you will build and the 15kv rating should be fine for running 2 serises MOTs. I used two of the same caps for my vttc and they ran stone cold.

thanks Weston the price better too! I have calculated resonance to be some where in the vicinity of 1300 pf

Hi Weston I believe those caps will work in rf amps but not so shure for pulse application. I'm thinking somthing like this

Link2

or this if you can manage it

Link2

or thease

Link2

or this

or this

Link2

the maxwell cap can take 4 MOTs with 6ft sparks, I've seen pictures some whare and the cornell dubillier caps have to be series paralleled to get to the voltage you want for a MMC. hopefully will help.

The capacitor is for a VTTC, which is almost CW operation. Caps for RF amplifiers will work fine in this application.

Most of the capacitors you are linking to would be overkill in a VTTC. A VTTC has rather modest peak tank current and rather high circulating current. Capacitors for this application must be chosen based on RMS power handling, not peak current handling.

Teravolt, even if he intends to run high peak currents, doorknob capacitors are one of the gold standards for pulse duty and the caps I linked would preform fine. Not to mention that all of the caps you linked too are much higher capacitance than the 1300pf Luces requires for his coil.
