Hi Download !
Your variac appears that was designed for 460 ~ 480V line
Standart Transformers and variacs core are made of Fe Si steel core. A good magnetic design for the Fe Si core uses a induction of 0.9~1.0 T. Lets apply 460V os the 320 turns and calculate the induction,
F = Frequency = 60 Hz V= voltage applied = 460V A = Core area = 100x60mm = 6000mm^2 =0.006m^2 N = 320 turns B = magnetic induction, tesla [T]
B= V/(4.44*N*A*F)
B= 460/(4.44 * 320 * 0.006 * 60) = 0.90T
Conclusions:
The varic can be connected to 460~480V line, as a designed.

The orange block is found on many ISO devices. It can be used to allow a stranded cable to attach to the variac on one side. The other side would have the ring terminal leads going up to the studs.
To allow rapid changing out without messing with Variac and having to crimp on new lugs if it is move elsewhere.

The red block in not attached to anything, it as a couple of resistors across it, but nothing else.
Unless the pictures can somehow help, I can't be bothered doing that. I have you all the data I can (from measurements) so unless they'll help (somehow) I won't
