just bought a HP sweep function generator for 30$ and a fluke bench multimeter for 20$ both of them still works, the pots are a bit rusty on the function generator though. anyone know what the sweep mode is used for? other than measuring frequency responce of a circuit

The main use of a sweep generator of that era would have been the alignment of TV and radio IF circuits, and perhaps testing RF filters - LC bandpass, bandstop etc, and crystal, electromechanical, and ceramic filters too.
