I have a couple of random questions about my gu-81m vttc...
How come when I turn it on and it hasn't been run for awhile the sparks are about 1 inch and then after it has run about 15 sec the arcs grow to upwards of 20 inches?
My science teacher wants me to run my vttc for the class, and I was going to touch the sparks from it, is there anything bad that could result from that?

It is probly not a good idea to tuch the spark directly and not at all if you dont know what you are doing. The tube needs a short warm up time of 2-5 min. see if that works

NO NO NO it's never safe to touch the sparks from a Tesla coil. Skin effect, nerve insensitivity, blah blah blah. Bottom line is, it could still kill you, and you should not do it without a Faraday suit.

Maybe your resonant capacitor is heating up and changing its capacitance. Or as other said, it takes a few seconds for the tube heater to heat up, but you should always pre-heat the tube before applying plate voltage.

My friend Lukas said there is nothing to it.so when I say I'm going to do it I turn it on the sparks are so narly I chicken out. But thanks for warning me! As for the filament I have a pre-heat resister, I let it run 30 secs, then after I switch it and let it run for another 30 secs before applying b+
