There aren't enough cordless drill became Tesla coils out there. Despite it seeming anti-climactic after the cordless circular saw tesla coil - I had to do it anyway. This one uses me as the RF return :)

Cool, I like the fact that it is cordless. It reminds me of the violet ray machines they had during the early part of the 20th century which were used for medical purposes.

I always knew these were possible, but, I need to understand it more. I know, your hand makes contact with the bottom of the secondary. So in turn, your body acts as the ground plane required for tesla coil operation. But, With one of these, I have to wonder. If you touch a grounded object with left hand, while 'shooting it off' with the right hand, Would you feel anything? Seeing your now providing a direct root to ground or....no?

I should consider building one, but I always wondered those risks, and if more power, could do any harm. I mean, if you want to, you can add Burst mode. Shoot a bolt every second, and have it charge some capacitors to say 200 volts (i mean like 5600uF+)...From experience with my large SSTC, that can kick out a 1ft spark or more. So your burst mode, can do the same, from such a device. Question is, would that possibly harm you..?

I'm eager to learn =P

Woah! Also, I don't know if it is my school's system that is blocking a video or something, but is there a video of this? (I am viewing this during my computer class)

EDIT:

Holy crap! It's like the taser of the future!

Here's the inside - I'll post a schematic soonish when I get a chance. It's a bog standard Max913 driving a half bridge tho.

Very cool!!! So you aren't using a BLDC motor to run this one like your other one? This is running totally off the 18v drill battery? What are you using for feedback?

This one use a 18V to 40V boost converter. There's also a fan inside the white pipe (40mm)to suck air in and cool all the guts.

Is about 15 watts. Transistors barely get warm. Boost converter runs cold to the touch.

My 18V lightning gun (saw based) is 300W and discharges 20"+...that's also on my youtube. Incidentally, great work on the hat! Was that you in the hackaday article?
