Is it worth it to build an MMC using MKT capacitors? planning to make 200nf @ 6KV ,.

Each capacitor is rated 330nf@600v

Thanks in advance

Coil size/power? 6KV is awfully low, and 200 nF is awfully high.
I wouldn't use anything that's not a CDE940/942 in all but the smallest coils.

DRSSTC

SECONDARY:
6 inch diameter
24 inch height
30 awg wire
fres : ~100khz (torroid will just follow to meet low freq)

MMC:
200nf

PRIMARY:
12 turns .25 copper tube

BRIDGE:
Half bridge of IRG4PC50UD igbts

>EVR used 6 kV on his Minibrute also, 110nf primary capacitor

Oh its a DRSSTC...in that case the 6KV makes sense.
I would definitely go CDE over no-name caps in that case.

I'm using some yellow MKT 470nF x 2000V for my 10 foot spark DRSSTC witn no problem

Hey Gregory,
You said:

Is you primary tank rated 470nf at 2000v? normally DRSSTC required some several KV rated primary capacitors isn't it?
And why is that? why DRSSTC primary capacitor rated at several KV even if that the pulsed DC is only at range 350vdc?

It is the primary current that matters. The voltage you get across the caps is I/(2*pi*f*C). That can be much larger than the bus voltage.

Yep, we usually design for a loaded Q of 10, which works out at a roughly 5kV tank cap for a fullbridge running on rectified 230V mains.

The primary current limiter (which every good DRSSTC has) will also protect the cap from overvoltage, because the capacitor voltage is related to the current through it by its impedance. The impedance depends on frequency, but the frequency of the coil doesn't change a great deal, so it can be assumed constant.

Someone told me that WIMA FKP1 is better than CDE 942 in high power application. Is this true?
