I got this small Francformer NST from a friend, previous use unknown(probably wasn't messed with just remove and sat on a shelf to collect dust). I wanted to make a small Tesla coil but I found that the arc it was supposed to create was only a millimeter long. :( Is it trash? Anything i can do to fix it ?

specs:

can the bottom be unscrewed and removed? my Franceformer needed a new switch, now works fine. but if you cant gain access to the internals in may be crap.

i can, i just did. i will look at the switch. Will any do?

EDIT: I replaced the switch and got the same results. It Vibrates a lot if i manage to sustain the one millimeter arc.

it sounds like the secondary is mostly lame... i dont know if its worth fixing, is yours filled with mica and tar like mine?

There are many documentations in the Internet about how to restore damaged NSTs. If the wiring is ok essentially you have to melt the tar, mix it a bit to destroy possible carbon tracks inside and let it cool again. Obviously something messy to do. Try to measure the resistance of the secondary winding. There are two coils with the center grounded (jn the case, I imagine). If you measure two identical resistances the wiring is at least not open. You can also check the short-circuit current. 9 kV should produce sparks with at least 3 mm.

Secondary's almost certainly shorted... depotting these things to fix them is an absolute pain in the arse, so unless you really can't get hold of another I'd say it's not worth the bother.
