Hey all. I recently got some of these as a result of ST's sampling program, and was wondering if anyone else had a chance to use SiC technology yet?
I could try to run tests or something with them if anyone would like me to. Their voltage drop is a bit high, though compared to normal Schottky diodes; It's around 1.6 volts at 10 amps.
No recovery time, so no ringing issues. It's pretty neat. I wonder if they'll start using them as the diodes in half bridges to get rid of the recovery time issues that occasionally happen (and occasionally destroys the mosfets/diodes)...

That's really cool.
I am holding a SiC photodiode that is sensitive to ultraviolet light, and intrinsically blind to visible light. They are billed as very robust monitors, for example of UV sources that cure ink at newspaper-press speed. Bought it a few months ago, and hope to actually un-bag and test it before the year is over.

Last time I looked, SiC diodes were very expensive, and while they have no recovery charge, they do have quite a high junction capacitance that causes ringing just the same.
If I were building a large boost PFC with 750V output for a DRSSTC, I'd surely look into them for the boost diode. That's the most demanding application for a diode I could ever think of. It's not exactly a picnic for the MOSFET or IGBT either.

Capacitance might ring, but at least it doesn't cut off a couple of ampere of current in under a nanosecond ... which something like a 1n4007 is capable of.

The strength of SiC is operating temperature. Max die temp is something like 600C, IIRC (vs ~140 for Si). Great for harsh environments, or if you need to handle a lot of power in a small package.
