I stumbled across PieSpy, a java IRC bot that does social network mapping, the other day. It outputs PNGs with the names of those talking and the amount of discussion between those talking as lines of varying thicknesses connecting them (the floating names). The diagram gets updated by the software about 1 time a minute (this can be set) and 'relations' decay pretty fast so the below image (from the 4hv room) isn't representative of the channel average, but more of just the ~15 minute buffer around the time it was taken. Still, it's fairly neat.

That's neat! How does it know who you're talking to, though? You don't always mention the other person's name explicitly, so there must be heuristics of some kind, I wonder what?

The heuristics involved could easily be such as who replies when who talks... if two users reply alternately for a few minutes, it would suggest they were talking to each other... add rules for quotes, for some keywords "but, and, hey" and the habits they represent, etc etc etc
