The device Firkragg mentioned is Mike Harrison's Jacob's Ladder-O-Phone Of Fire. To make the fireballs, Mike squirted butane from a gas lighter refill into it. So it was kind of cheating.

Actually a sprinkle of sugar as a carbon surrogate might just do it a-la-donut. So far the donut has little substance though. I need to increase the efficiency of the vortex production and I need to develop a flame/combustion of some sort in a vortex. Probably need to make a little tornado device so that testing can be done as a continuous process. The inert gas is still a possibility as it will diffuse and the carrier will become more flammable as the vortex proceeds. This is rather unfamiliar territory - aerodynamics and gaseous combustion. However the weekend is over and the noisy stuff will have to wait.

I remeber form Mike's Electric stuff that photocopier toner is very flamable and I knwo for a fact that toner is light enough to stay in the air (and stick to any surface making it perminantly black). Maybe that will work if you can get some.

Thanks for reminding me, I got a jar of the stuff from a photocopier from a roadside throwout only a few month ago. Messy stuff indeed.
