3. Strobotach. $$$ I have one of these but not sure it's working properly, it's also dim. Make sure you get one with a Xenon flashlamp.
4. All of the above do not necessarily synchronize with the line, you need to ask yourself if you need firing rate AND to know if you're line synchronized. If the answer is yes to both, then you have to come up with a sync. circuit too.

I can't find links to any of the information at this time, but this question has been previously studied in detail, using both acoustic and optical means to determine the firing rate of TC static spark gaps. As I recall, the firing was found to be rather chaotic, and never remotely achieved the steady break-rate seen in synchronous rotary spark gaps. That's why a typical static spark gap sounds so "ragged", without any discernable tone.
