If the cable is flush against a wall, could you slip a thin sheet of steel behind it to close the gap? Or (much less effective) mostly close the gap with pole pieces that hug the back of the cable?

Hmm, I had a feeling it was going to be a bit difficult with just a U-core, I just had no idea it is THAT impratical.
I also did so calculations for stray capacitance which seems much more practial than a U-core, but no where near a reasonable amount of power (a few petty mW). I guess a split core CT is my only real option :/ Thank you guys for your help.
Out of curiousity's sake, are that any other alternative ways, even ones that couldn't even give me a watt?

I'm afraid that my theory & math are fading/lazy but I think that a rectangular (e.g. 100mm/side) air-cored multi-turn coil with one edge resting along the cable may pick up significant energy from the magnetic field.
