That kinda circuit is used in ccfl inverters for the lamp in scanners and such. U dont need the capacitor. I've built these with small centertapped transformers.

Hi everyone

Dr. Duck wrote ...

Well, the reasoning behind HOT's is due to the high circulating voltage and current in resonance in a ZVS driver. It's around pi * input voltage, so with 170 vDC in, it would put out arouuund 550 volts. with higher voltages (like 220, or above) the voltage starts to become too much for conventional BJT's or MOSFET's and thus HOT's become a more viable option... Only issue is driving the base!

Well, that's not the true issue; I would use 1200V IGBT's any time over BJT's. The real issue is feedback and biasing problems.

Perhaps something like this?

Well, it could work for a tiny CCFL inverter or whatever, but think of what would happen if you had 1000 collector volts and need to drive bases with 5A of current from this. You need a feedback winding or a step-down transformer in order for feedback to work properly.

U do, for any serious power :P For induction heaters, the capacitor is fixed in parallel with the work coil and this is driven by a step-down transformer.
