Hi ,

An puerile question :
When we rub PVC rod with a cat, we can lift small paper pieces with the charged rod.
I was trying the same thing with a 5kV DC source attached to a metal plate, but there was no effect at all.
Is there something fundamentally different from a static charged rod and a 5kV DC source ?Or how to convert a 5kV DC source to a static charge ?

Cheers
Thomas

There is no fundametal difference. The most common problem is that the voltage is too low. 5 kV is enough to be easily detectable but you need higher voltages for it to be interesting.

Hi Bjorn,
Thanks for answering.
There is no fundametal difference.
I was thinking a bit about this and now I am not so sure.In one case we are using an "electrode" which is essentially an insulator (comb) and in the other case it is a conductor (metal plate).

The electricity part is the same, it is a charge generated by moving electrons. The difference is that when you got an insulator it is much more likely that some or most of the charge will stay there. If the comb was conductive the electrons would just flow through your body.

So metal will tend to lose all the charge with the smallest touch.

Actually at 5kV i am not able to get any effect at all.I kept 2 plates at a distance of about 6mm and put a light sheet of paper in between. But there was no movement at all.

Did you try it at near vertical to eliminate most of gravity's force?

I'd assume it's simply an issue of magnitude ... it is dangerous to charge a conductor with the same voltage as an insulator with static charge though, the conductor can discharge far faster.

Actually I am not charging anything. I just have two sheets of metal in a vertical plane, with 5kV DC connected,to them and spaced 6mm or so apart.I bring some light paper between the two plates ,but i don't see any movement at all.Let me see if I can increase the voltage and try some more.

Can't have a voltage without a charge.

Look at this electrostatic motor that Avi made:

One sheet of aluminium foil inside the plastic ring. When the foil is charged it will repel the electrode it is charged from and be attracted to the electrode of the opposite polarity. When it has turned 180 degrees it will discharge at the opposite electrode.

5 kV does not give a lot of effect, 50 kV will make a significant force.

Well I've charged my cat to a point where I sparked to the (pissed) cat at about 2 in away. that's about 26kV so...
