Hi guys. This may seem silly to ask. But I have an old OLD secondary coil from the 60's that is in kinda bad shape, yet it's perfect for my coil. It's verinshed with some cloudy stuff which may be PU but I dont know that that material was around when this was manucatured.
The wire is in great shape, but I'm concered if I go trying to take the bad looking varnish off, I may strip the enamel from the wire instnatly making it useless.

Acetone might work. Haven't tried it for myself though. It shouldn't harm the enamel. Maybe the top layer is only what looks bad so if you sand it a little it might look nice underneath. Then just recoat it with new varnish. Thats probably what i would do.

The best thing that "I" can tell you (from years of experience of being a painter) is to just give it a good sanding( not down to the wire,of course) then just start recoating it. I preffer to use polyureathane, takes a while to dry but it seems to be a good insulator. "DON'T" use the fast (water based stuff) dry kind,I've used it B4 and it just doesn't seem to stand up to the voltages that that coil could possibly see....just my 2 cennts worth...

Yeah I agree with not using the water based stuff. It doesnt insulate as good like you said but it also comes off easier too. It does dry a lot quicker though so if youre in a hurry I guess it's okay.

Well guys, i apreaciate the help, but not a day after I asked this question. I got ahold of 12" PVC pipe and I decided to make this coil expandable, I'll keep the small poorly vernished one to try some sympathetic coil expeimentation. Kolas

You can also buy the stuff in a spray can,I've found that that works a lot better and it saves on buying brushes (I use the cheapo foam kind and just throw them away when they get hard). It also costs more..

We have some of the spray at work but the fumes were making me sick. Since I had to use it indoors. I prefer to paint it on. The spray doesn't seem lke it coats evenly.
