Number of licensed physcicians in the US (2005 U.S. Dept of Health statistics) = 700,000

Accidental deaths caused by licensed physicians in the US (2005 U.S. Dept. of Health statistics) = 120,000

Accidental deaths per physician (2005) = 0.171

----------------------------------------
Number of gun owners in the US (FBI statistics 2005) = 80,000,000

Number of accidental gun deaths per year (all age groups - FBI statistics 2005) = 1,500

Number of accidental gun deaths per gun owner = 0.000188

----------------------------------------

So statistically, gun owners are approximately 9,000 times safer than doctors.

Now, not everyone has a gun, but almost everyone has at least one doctor!

Interesting point. Presumably, by the same logic, bullets kill even fewer people than guns.

Was that a chain letter someone sent you?

You need to compare the number of lives saved by doctors, and the number of lives saved by gun owners using guns.

I have had 3 people die under my care in the few weeks and perhaps 50 in the last 5 years.
Your figures say that perhaps 0.2/year is an "accident" ie 1 in 5 years.
I don't recall any "accidents" and all deaths are reviewed here. Certainly people come into hospital because they are unwell and at risk of dying. They will have many interventions by many staff. Some in retrospect will turn out to be incorrect as new information becomes available. Sometimes there is a known complication in which a risk is taken and this applies to much of medicine. Eg Of every 10,000 patients Penicillin saves hundreds but kills one with an allergic reaction. Is this an accident caused by a doctor. Probably by statisticians standards. Was the doctor wrong in administering penicillin? Judge for yourself.

All I am saying is intrpret these statistics with care.

Why dont you compare intentional deaths from guns with intentional deaths from physicians?

Not that I really want to get into this debate since it will doubtlessly descend into crap but....

Two words: Doctor Kevorkian

Take it as a joke.

Not well-researched or well-presented statistics. Hey, whilst we're at it, why don't we debate abortion...again?

doctors use there practice on a dayly dasis for a good 8 hours (unless your my doc and show up only when the greens or not freshly mowed) and most peeps would not use the guns no more often than once a week.

freq of use and duration need to be factored
