He isn't trying to make an amplifier to drive a speaker, he's trying to test an amplifier he has made for some other purpose with a speaker.
In other words, your amplifier might work perfectly fine, you're just testing it in the wrong way. What sort of circuit will be connected to the output of this amplifier in your audio coil?
Also, that sort of transistor circuit tends to be a bit sensitive to variations in transistor gain, so it's not ideal. Adding a resistor between the transistor emitter and ground will make things a lot better. Just using an op-amp instead is easier to calculate, and even better in most respects.
